Benny Moon (20) of Shingle Springs, California passed for the lead on the second lap of the "Turkey Night Grand Prix" USAC Ford Focus Midget main event and led 29 laps of 30-lap race for the biggest win in his young career.
The most prestigious race of the year for USAC Ford Focus Midgets is the "Turkey Night Grand Prix," held at Irwindale Speedway's famous 1/3 mile track on Thanksgiving day. Thirty-five drivers from all over the nation vied for the 26 starting spots. Moon qualified fifth with a lap time of 14.577.
Fast qualifier Casey Riggs of Indianapolis, Indiana attempted to pass for the lead many times, including a last lap shot at Moon for the win, but was fortunate to hold off Ricky Ehrgott of Riverview, Florida, for second after sliding up the track. Ehrgott finished third, with polesitter Chase Barber finishing fifth.
Benny Moon is well known as a Kart Racing Champion and CART/Champ Car Formula Dodge Scholarship Winner. In the 2004 Skip Barber National Championship Formula Dodge road racing series, Benny won three poles and four wins out of 14 races.
Moon never raced ovals, until this year racing in the USAC Ford Focus California Midget Pavement Series. He has three wins, four poles, a track record and nine top-fives out of 13 races run. Benny Moon won a spot on the 2005 Ron Sutton's Winner's Circle career development race team and is currently a hot prospect of IRL racing teams.
