On Sunday December 12, 2004 Justin Moon won his first car race at Laguna Seca in Monterey California! The weekend started with Friday practice. Justin's older brother Benny went out with Justin during the 3 practice sessions. Benny was a little concerned having not been in a Formula Dodge since the last race of the 2004 season at Road America that he might not be fast enough to help Justin. After a few laps of lead and follow it was obvious that Benny was up to speed as Justin had a tough time hanging on to his older brother. Justin used the practice following Benny, working on his corner entry speeds, hand movements and smoothness. Soon Justin was shaving 10ths off of his lap times as he circled the famed Laguna Seca race track. On Saturday Justin qualified 2nd in his group, group 1 but had to start 12th due to a loss of controll during qualifying according to the rules. The race proved to be rather exciting as he moved up through the field lap after lap! He set fast lap of the race eventualy making up to second and challenging for the win 3 times during the last lap that included a drag race to the checkered flag.
On Sunday Justin qualified on the pole by a full second! He led every lap and held off a last lap challenge by the series points leader Tim Traver to win his first race in the Skip Barber Western Regional Series!
All this was in preperation for the Karting scholarship runoffs being held at Laguna Seca in January. Justin is hoping to win one of four scholarships being awarded to 4 of the 35 kart racers who will be participating in the runoffs! Justin wishes to thank all the coaches and instructors in addition to his brother Benny. With out their help and instruction he couldn't have won his first race so soon.
