Benny Moon of Shingle Springs California ran in his first USAC Ford Focus Midget race this past week end March 26th. Running with his new team "Ron Sutton's Winners Circle" in a new chassis for the first time with out any prior testing was a little challenging but not unproductive. The team had received the chassis latter than expected and had just finished assembly one week prior to the first race at Irwindale. Benny literally arrived Friday afternoon, ran three practice sessions and went home with the fastest times in practice. In fact he was just 3/10s off of the track record set last season!
On Saturday Benny and the team made a gear change that didn’t work out as expected and he ended up qualifying 8th out of 20 drivers. During the 35 lap main Ben moved up to 4th and was working on 3rd when his car became extremely "tight". He made in car adjustments but lost 3 spots in the process. He finished 7th.
Benny and the team felt they had learned allot during the race week end and feel they are much better prepared for the 2nd race which happens to be this coming up week end again at Irwindale!
"This first race was basically a test for us. I think we will finish a little better next week and I'm looking forward to coming back", said the young Shingle Springs driver.
