Benny Moon Aces Test in NASCAR Stock Car
Bill McAnally Racing tested RSWC Driver Benny Moon in a 3500 pound NASCAR Grand National West Car at Stockton's famed 1/4 mile Speedway recently. The results were ... Impressive!
In only his second session on the track, Benny had the car in the 14.70's for lap times ... impressing McAnally and the whole BMR crew.
Bill McAnally Racing (BMR) is a 3-time Champion in what was NASCAR's Winston West Series ... now known as NASCAR Grand National West. BMR developed Brendan Gaughan all the way to NASCAR Winston Cup/Nextel Cup racing.
The car came from the Richard Childress Racing (RCR) stable of NASCAR Busch cars. It is 3500 pound, 105" wheelbase stock car driven to two wins by Ron Hornaday in the NASCAR Busch Series. These cars are especially challenging to drive on small, tight tracks like the 1/4 mile of Stockton Speedway.
Benny learned the car and line around the track quickly ... and got up to speed amazingly quick.
Benny's best time on used tires was a 14.69 ... which is only a couple tenths off what the fast cars run at Stockton ... on race day with lots of rubber down and new tires.
The 100 lap test at Stockton served two purposes. One, to show Ron Sutton if the talented young Moon could indeed wheel a heavy NASCAR Stock Car as well as he did the lighter USAC Midgets and Formula Road Race Cars he won many races in.
The second purpose, was for Bill McAnally to test Benny for a seat on his race team ... and Benny passed with flying colors. It looks like Benny will be driving a BMR Late Model in the NASCAR Weekly Series at Altamont Raceway for 2006. This will give Benny valuable experience in the heavier Stock Cars, with a top team ... and the opportunity to win races.

Bill McAnally Racing is the official Driver Development Race Team for Richard Childress Racing (RCR). RCR, most famous for winning 6 championships with the late Dale Earnhardt, is currently fielding NASCAR's Nextel Cup cars for Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton and Clint Boyer, plus cars in NASCAR's Busch series.
BMR is also an official "Drive for Diversity" (D4D) Race Team, having fielded cars for Allison Duncan and Sarah Fisher (of IRL fame). For 2006 BMR is fielding a Late Model stock car for D4D driver Peter Hernandez from Chicago.
